ART STARS OF YESTERDAY, ALL STARS OF TODAY – AND TOMORROW

In looking at the ‘Blue-Chip’ collection of abstract work on view at The Gallery at 13th Street Winery, St. Catharines, it can be convincingly argued that it belongs to a brand of modernism which is avowedly indebted to the past. Modernism has much uncharted territory and these artists while drawing on the wellsprings of Automatism and Painters Eleven, strike out new paths for themselves. But, on view, besides historic modernism and a reverence for modernism on the part of younger artists, the works speak effectively of the art of today with its devotion to the nature of creative expression. Artists such as these offer a point of departure for current discourse and an exchange of critical ideas in contemporary as well as modern art. Here we see the ‘Art Stars’ of yesterday, ‘All Stars’ of today – and tomorrow.
