David Urban at 13th Street Gallery in St. Catharines

ST CATHARINES – 13th Street Gallery located at 1776 Fourth Avenue in St. Catharines is proud to announce its upcoming exhibition DAVID URBAN featuring works by the artist from the private collection of John Mann opening Saturday September 25, 2021. According to Urban, John’s private collection is a good representation of all his works through his career. David Urban is one of Canada’s most celebrated artists, his works can be found in major galleries such as the Art Gallery of Ontario, the National Gallery, Musee des beaux-arts de Montréal and Museum London.

David Urban’s paintings are dynamic with bold collisions of line and shape, clashing tones, kinetic brushstrokes that border between abstraction and representation. A modern-day Renaissance-man, Urban’s interests and passions are extensive; he is a poet, a painter and a musician who plays multiple instruments. Reflecting on music, childhood and the primacy of the imagination, David’s paintings are  deeply implicated in the history and methodology of paint. He integrates both real and abstract elements, simultaneously presenting two disparate threads of modern painting.

Born in Toronto in 1966, Urban studied at York University and graduated in 1989 with a BA in English Literature and a BFA specializing in Painting and Drawing. In 1991 he received an MA in English Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Windsor and completed an MFA in 1994 from the University of Guelph.

The exhibition will continue until Saturday October 30, 2021

  EXHIBITION OPENS on Saturday September 24th, 2022 Featuring works by Ronald Boaks Niagara artist Ronald Boaks was born in Newmarket, Ontario. He works in a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, and collage, but he is best known for his vivid expressive abstract paintings in which he aims to reflect beauty, balance, desire and humor. “There are many dualities in my life: I am both a Romantic and a Modernist, my visual interests include the two and three dimensional, I work with black and white as well as with vibrant colour and I delight in both abstraction and realism.               My passion for making art spans 60 years. This show includes works from 1985 to the present. The earliest works are landscapes; close-up representations of the detailed colour and texture of rock. They evolved into ideal landscapes and morphed into Modernist 'acts of painting'. Then my more Romantic inclinations brought in flowers or the female form in collage. These meanderings between my Modernist and Romantic dualities have led me to my most recent works In which I have juxtaposed two seemingly different images. I enjoy the frisson when discovering the relationship between a realistic image and an abstract composition. If I had to reduce my approach to art making to one sentence, it would be “I love the simple complexity of putting together the many elements of interest from my life.” Ronald Boaks, 2022" ["post_title"]=> string(35) "Ronald Boaks Works From 1985 - 2022" ["post_excerpt"]=> string(0) "" ["post_status"]=> string(7) "publish" ["comment_status"]=> string(6) "closed" ["ping_status"]=> string(6) "closed" ["post_password"]=> string(0) "" ["post_name"]=> string(33) "ronald-boaks-works-from-1985-2022" ["to_ping"]=> string(0) "" ["pinged"]=> string(0) "" ["post_modified"]=> string(19) "2022-09-24 12:28:21" ["post_modified_gmt"]=> string(19) "2022-09-24 16:28:21" ["post_content_filtered"]=> string(0) "" ["post_parent"]=> int(0) ["guid"]=> string(63) "https://13thstreetgallery.com/?post_type=exhibition&p=6718" ["menu_order"]=> int(0) ["post_type"]=> string(10) "exhibition" ["post_mime_type"]=> string(0) "" ["comment_count"]=> string(1) "0" ["filter"]=> string(3) "raw" ["subtitle"]=> string(9) "1985-2022" ["start"]=> string(10) "2022-09-24" ["end"]=> string(10) "2022-10-22" ["banner"]=> bool(false) }
